You are running on empty, and you still cannot stop. The laptop closes and your mind keeps going. You take the rare day off and feel anxious, not rested. If that is you, I want to say something before anything else. You are not failing at balance. Your system is stuck in a setting, and that setting can be changed.
I work with founders who have built real things and cannot enjoy any of it, because some part of them never gets to stand down. The exhaustion is real. But the reason you cannot rest is not the amount of work. It is deeper than that.
Why you can’t switch off
At some point, your nervous system learned that being on was safer than being off.
When your worth, your security, or your sense of control got wired to constant output, rest stopped feeling like relief and started feeling like risk. So your body keeps idling in a low-grade stress state, always a little activated, always scanning for the next fire. That is why the vacation does not land, why the quiet evening makes you restless, why you reach for the phone the second there is a gap. Your system does not believe it is safe to come down.
That is not a character flaw. It is a trained response, and trained responses can be retrained.
Why rest and time off don’t fix it
You have tried the obvious fixes. The weekend away, the digital detox, the promise to log off by six. And the moment you stop, the anxiety rushes in to fill the space, so you go back to work just to make it quiet.
This is the trap. If your system treats rest as a threat, then resting will feel bad, and you will keep choosing the activation because at least it feels familiar. More time off does not help when the problem is that your body has forgotten how to be safe while still. You cannot schedule your way out of a nervous system that is stuck on.
What has to change is the setting itself, the belief that you are only safe, or only worthy, when you are producing.
Work With Alexandra
Ready to actually switch off?
Private, virtual hypnotherapy for founders whose systems forgot how to rest.
Book a SessionWhat a session actually works on
We work with the nervous system and the belief keeping it switched on, at the same time.
Part of the work is teaching your body, in a deeply relaxed state, that it is safe to come down, so it relearns a setting it lost somewhere along the way. Part of it is reaching the subconscious rule that your worth depends on constant output, and letting it update to something that does not require you to run yourself into the ground to feel okay. Clients describe being able to close the laptop and actually be present, to feel rest as rest instead of as anxiety with nothing to do.
That is not laziness returning. It is your system finally believing it is allowed to recover.
Is this a replacement for real rest or medical care?
No. If you are dealing with serious burnout, exhaustion that is affecting your health, your sleep, or your mood in a significant way, please involve a medical professional. This work sits alongside good care, not in place of it.
What hypnosis adds is the piece that rest alone often cannot reach, the reason you could not rest in the first place. When your system learns it is safe to switch off, the ordinary recovery tools, time, sleep, boundaries, finally start working, because you are no longer fighting your own wiring to use them.
How many sessions does it take?
It varies, and I will not overpromise with something this tied to the body.
Many founders feel a genuine drop in the background hum within the first few sessions, that first taste of being able to come down. Burnout that has been building for years, or that is braided together with deeper fear patterns, is usually a steadier process. The goal is not a single relaxing afternoon. It is resetting the setting, so being off stops feeling dangerous.
A place to start on your own
If you want to begin today, notice what happens in your body when you try to stop. Sit for five minutes with nothing to do and watch what rises. Restlessness? Guilt? The urge to be useful? That reaction is the pattern showing itself, and meeting it with curiosity instead of obeying it is the first small loosening.
My book, The Insight Journal, is built for this kind of honest noticing, with prompts that help you meet what is actually driving you. It is a good first step for the days you want to understand yourself a little better.
And when you are ready to teach your system that it is safe to rest, at the level where the pattern actually lives, that is what private sessions are for.
